Why Protein Plays an Important Part in Weight Loss

No matter what all the in fashion diets tell us the best results for a weight loss program is a well balanced and organised regime, which has all the correct nutrients and includes the good food groups. A great diet is also one that is easy to follow, tastes good and creates results.

Protein is an essential component of any diet program. For the very cells of your body, protein is an essential nutrient and also affects such things as your skin, hair, nails, but the most importantly the protein must be in the correct amounts to have the maximum impact.

Too much protein can lead to severe health issues and may worsen existing conditions.

Too little protein can also be an issue because the body will usually work hard towards acquiring the right level of the correct  type, in other words if it doesn't get what it needs, a hunger signal will probably be sent out until the correct level  is stabilized. This will mean, in practice, that your body will start to consume far more food that it actually needs.

An increased level of protein can make  diet strategy a little less difficult since it suppresses the appetite, allowing you to feel satisfied on much less food..

What are your Protein Requirements?

How much protein you may need each day will basically depend on four criteria, your age, your sex, your physical fitness and your general well being.  Many nutritional experts suggest that the upper limit for protein should be 35% of your daily calorie intake. The amount that you eat will vary with age with the largest requirement being needed early in life.  An infant for example needs just over 2 grams of protein per kilogram of their weight. On the other hand an adult body builder only requires about 1.0-1.5 grams per kg of body weight.

To get a rough estimate of your own needs you will have to convert your weight to kilograms. To do this, divide your body weight by 2.2. Take this number and multiply it by the relevant number below.

If you do little exercise and are not physically fit……… multiply by 0.04
If you are reasonably fit, in other words you exercise regularly by walking or doing gentle workouts of some description…… multiply by 0.05-0.08
If you are really active. in other words doing intense exercise for around 30-60 minutes a day for the majority of the week ….multiply by 0.09-1.00

If you are relatively knowledgeable about your nutritional requirements you can discover your own personal diet program strategy.  If, however, you have any health problems or are completely confused about what you need to eat consult a physician or a registered dietitian or even a nutritionist.

An excellent weight reduction plan should contain 50% carbohydrates, 15% fat and 35% protein. Regardless of fad diets claims, carbohydrates are really critical to a wholesome diet plan but it is most important that only the best carbohydrates are selected.  The ones you do not need are simple carbs that are can be easily digested and send your blood sugar skyrocketing, which will only lead to extra weight gain. Make sure you use only the complex carbohydrates which are slower to be digested, and don't trigger sugar spikes and for that reason, do not cause weight gain..

Alternative Supplements

Snacks that are made of protein, healthy fat and fiber can support your effort to eat less by keeping the feelings of hunger at bay. Fiber fills you up and protein take longer to digest, so you will feel less hungry.
A glass of low fat milk, which supplies 9 grams of protein and 31% of the day-to-day calcium requirements, is another good choice. Even chocolate milk is now regarded as one of the very best all around drinks for athletes due to its combination of protein and carbohydrates. However make sure you use low fat or skimmed milk so as to maintain the low calorie count.

Protein supplements are another snack selection that can, on occasions, serve as a replacement meal.  There are a number of different products on the market, such as, shakes, liquid protein shots, protein bars and even water with added protein.

You can also buy protein powders that include soy, rice, and egg ingredients. .A number of these would be useful to vegetarians or vegans. Liquid protein shots are a quick and easy option if you are in a hurry but make sure the ingredients have the right quantities of protein and are of the highest standard.

Protein shakes can serve as a meal replacement and are a great to start to your weight loss program. Again selecting the right shake is very important to ensure that the appropriate nutrition is received each day. Most protein shakes come in a number of flavors, such as the old favorits vanilla chocolate, and strawberry, although there are many more varieties on the market today.  Studies show that these shakes can be very beneficial in keeping you on your diet plan schedule for long periods.  But remember don’t overdo their use, only two meals should be replaced by the shakes, with one typical meal and two snacks in addition.

Another great snack option is the protein bar, but you must read the label meticulously. Many of the protein bars that are commercially available include added fat and sugars, which make them just as damaging to your diet plan as the candy bar.

There are other popular snack choices such as a handful of nuts, which are among the best sources of protein you can eat. Even something like a hardboiled egg is also a handy snack to eat at lunch time as not only does it have excellent protein but has other ingredients which are essential for building muscle.

Remember; take your time before deciding to go ahead with a weight loss program. Make sure it’s the right one for you, if necessary speak with your physician or another professional that can give you the guidance you need.
